What Is THC Resin: Cannabis Concentrate Guide & Uses

Cannabis comes in many forms, with one of the most exciting being THC resin. Resin is the basis for a ton of cannabis products, but it's also popular in its raw form. If you're looking to branch out and try new ways of enjoying cannabis, resin should be at the top of your list. Learn more about it and why you'll definitely love the experience of using it.

What is Live Resin?

Resin is the amber or brown material secreted from the trichomes of mature cannabis. While every part of the plant has its use, resin is definitely the most valuable because it contains the majority of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis that gives you a high when ingested. Compared to methods like smoking or vaping, using resin packs an extra strong punch with faster, more intense results.

Live resin is a specific type of resin made only from fresh cannabis plants. It has a rich aroma and taste, setting it apart from other products that are typically made from dried plants. Between those qualities and its potency, many consider it to be the absolute peak of cannabis.

How is it Extracted?

Live resin is extracted from (as we said) fresh cannabis exclusively. Once harvested, these plants are flash-frozen or fresh-frozen to preserve the terpenes responsible for flavor and potency, qualities that can be dampened through the traditional drying process. After freezing, a solvent like butane or propane is pumped in to separate the trichomes from the rest of the cannabis. The trichomes are then pressed to extract the super-fresh live resin.

Other forms of resin can also be extracted similarly, just using dried plants instead of fresh. Rolling trichomes squeeze out the resin, and filtering trichomes through a screen results in kief. You can also knock off trichomes by moving cannabis around in ice water, after which the trichomes are collected and pressed into hash.

It's also possible to extract resin on a smaller scale. Simply rub fresh cannabis between your fingers or a surface. The sticky substance that comes out of it will be the resin. Obviously, though, this poses a lot of issues for quality control and scale, so it's probably not the most reliable.

Types of Cannabis Resin Products

Various cannabis products are made from resin. The most basic would be hash or hashish, which is simply resin compressed into small pucks. To use it, just break off a piece and smoke as desired.

Kief is another product made by filtering and powderizing trichomes. This substance can be sprinkled onto other forms of cannabis or added to food as an edible to enhance potency.

How to Smoke Resin

Resin is easy to smoke in several ways. One thing some do is add a bit to a bowl or blunt, the extra potency of the resin enhancing an otherwise normal smoke.

However, if you want to use resin on its own, dabbing is the preferred method. Balls of resin can be placed in the nail and then smoked like any other concentrate.

Due to its potency, live resin is also a popular choice for use in edibles, particularly in elements that remain uncooked. You can also add it to lotions or balms for an extra kick of cannabis.
